Paris, April 2004

Paris, April 2004 Setting: In April 2004, Tony Allen accepted to look back at the strong points of a career that stretches back to the early Seventies. We met at the Swedish Institute in his adopted city of Paris, France, where Allen was invited to talk about his experiences of censorship. The meeting was organised by the Freemuse association, as part of their launch of the book “Which Way Nigeria?” The interview was first broadcast by World Tracks, a weekly programme on Radio France International.

Introduction to the gifted drummer who, despite his three decades in the music business, remains "young in mind". In his studio album "Home Cooking" Tony collaborated with Blur singer Damon Albarn

The diverse ingredients Allen has put into "Home Cooking": hip hop, soul, jazz, "pure Afro Beat", r'n'b. "What I look for is variety"

Allen's engagement at the side of fellow-Nigerian musicians against plagues like bootlegging. The challenges of daily life in the country's biggest city, Lagos

The release of a "Best of" spanning Allen's rich career allows him to take stock of a hardworking music career

The enduring "positive vibes" gives his music its youth and cutting-edge quality
